Code of Ethics

The Tennessee Government Finance Officers Association (TGFOA) is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in the practice of governmental finance. To affirm this commitment, TGFOA has adopted the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada’s Code of Professional Ethics as its guiding framework.

This Code of Ethics serves as a cornerstone for maintaining public trust and promoting transparency, accountability, and fairness in managing public resources. It provides a set of principles and expectations that all TGFOA members are encouraged to embrace in their professional roles. These principles include:

  • Integrity: Acting honestly and with strong moral principles in all financial and organizational matters.
  • Accountability: Ensuring responsible stewardship of public funds and adherence to laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Transparency: Promoting openness in financial reporting and decision-making to build trust with the public and stakeholders.
  • Professionalism: Striving for excellence in the field of governmental finance through continuous learning, collaboration, and ethical behavior.
  • Fairness: Treating all individuals and organizations with equity and impartiality.

By aligning with the GFOA Code of Professional Ethics, TGFOA members demonstrate their dedication to fostering a culture of ethical leadership and sound financial management within Tennessee’s cities, counties, school districts, utilities, and special purpose jurisdictions. This alignment also reflects TGFOA’s commitment to supporting its members in maintaining the highest standards of practice and contributing positively to their communities.
