Tennessee Government Finance Officers Association (TGFOA) Scholarship Programs

TGFOA is committed to supporting the professional growth and development of government finance professionals through a variety of scholarship opportunities. These scholarships provide financial assistance to help recipients gain valuable education, training, and networking opportunities that enhance their careers and strengthen their organizations.

Available Scholarships:

    • Carson Swinford Government Accounting Scholarship
      Named in honor of Carson Swinford, this scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a degree in accounting or a related field with an interest in government finance. It aims to support the next generation of finance professionals by assisting with education costs and encouraging careers in public sector financial management.

    • First-Time Attendee to the TGFOA Fall or Spring Conference
      This scholarship covers up to $1,000 in expenses for registration, hotel, travel, and meals (if not provided at the conference). It is designed to encourage participation from finance professionals who have not previously attended a TGFOA conference, providing them with access to educational sessions, networking opportunities, and best practices in government finance.


    • First-Time Attendee to the GFOA National Conference
      This scholarship provides up to $1,000 to cover the costs of attending the national Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) conference. The national conference offers a broader perspective on government finance trends, policies, and innovations while allowing recipients to connect with finance professionals from across the country


    • Scholarship to the GFOA Leadership Academy
      This scholarship provides financial assistance for participation in the GFOA Leadership Academy, a week-long program focused on leadership development for government finance professionals. Attendees step away from technical training to develop leadership skills, strategic thinking, and management capabilities. This opportunity is ideal for Finance Directors, Assistant Finance Directors, Treasurers, Department Managers, and City Managers seeking to advance their leadership abilities and career growth.


    • Scholarship for the GFOA Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) Certification
      This scholarship provides financial assistance to government finance professionals pursuing the Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) designation through GFOA. The CPFO program is designed to recognize expertise in public finance by covering key areas such as accounting, auditing, budgeting, treasury management, and financial reporting. Earning this certification enhances credibility, demonstrates a commitment to excellence, and opens doors to career advancement in government finance. This scholarship helps cover exam fees and related costs to support professionals in achieving this prestigious designation.
